Here is our 7 Waves look back on Day 1 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

After a fantastic opening ceremony which saw us take a journey from the Big Bang through to Newton and the apple culminating in a Royal Marine Commando Joe Townsend who lost both his legs when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan entering the arena on a 300ft high zip wire from the Orbit ending with Britain’s 1st ever paralympic Gold medallist Margaret Maughan lighting the flame.

Paralympics GB didn’t have to wait too long for it’s 1st Gold of the games, Sarah Storey rode the perfect race in the Women’s C5 individual pursuit catching her Polish opponent with still half of the race to go.

GB also managed to win a 2nd Gold on the opening day as Jon Fox claimed Gold in the pool in the S7 100m backstroke. It was a tense finish though as Fox only just out touched Yevheni Bohodayko. Their was also silver in the pool for GB with Hannah Russell in S12 400m Free and Nyree Kindred in S6 100 backstroke just missing out on the top spot on the podium.

Mark Colboune also won silver in the velodrome, while we also had Bronze medal success for Zoe Newson in Powerlifting and Ben Quilter in the 60kg category of Judo.

In other GB news our mens wheelchair basketball team narrowly lost to Germany after extra time in their opening encounter 77-72.

Finally for today Lee Pearson one of Paralympics GB’s most recognisable team members posted the highest score in Grade 1B of the Team event of the Equestrian at the fantastic North Greenwich Park Venue.
